Early Years Entitlement Funding 

The government provides funding for all three and four year old children, starting from the funding period after their third birthday until they start school (usually at statutory school age – the term following their fifth birthday), to attend an Ofsted registered early years and childcare setting. Such settings include pre-schools, nurseries, certain childminders, school nursery classes and nursery schools.

Child's birthday When you can claim
 1 January to 31 Marchthe beginning of term on or after 1 April
 1 April to 31 Augustthe beginning of term on or after 1 September
 1 September to 31 Decemberthe beginning of term on or after 1 January 

These children qualify for 15 hours of free Early Years Entitlement per week for up to 38 weeks per year, during school term time. The full 15 hours must be used over at least 2 days, a minimum of 2 ½ hours and maximum 10 hours per day.

11 hour Stretched Funding

The stretched offer is funded over 51 weeks x 11 hours (this totals 561 hours but over the Christmas period, the additional 9 hours can be used in a part week.

The stretched offer will be available in 3 funding periods although these will be reviewed annually depending on the Spring Term and Easter holiday dates.





Golden Ticket 2 year old funding

Some 2-year-olds in England can also get free early education and childcare.

You must be getting one of the following:

  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • support through part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act
  • the guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit) and have an annual income not over £16,190
  • the Working Tax Credit 4-week run on (the payment you get when you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
  • Working Tax Credits and earn £16,190 a year or less

If your child is eligible, you can start claiming after they turn 2. The date you can claim will depend on when their birthday is.
